Orfeo among Houston Chronicle’s top five novels for 2014

Orfeo was selected as one of the top five novels for 2014, “The Best Books of 2014,” by Maggie Galehouse, Houston Chronicle, December 3, 2014.

Powers’ astonishing novel captures one fictional composer’s life in a text that is almost a soundtrack, by turns mysterious, dissonant, harmonious and sweet. Powers’ lucid, emotional descriptions of music extend from compositions by Mahler to the contemporary fictional music composted by his protagonist, Peter Els, who wants only “a roomful of grateful listeners.”
